QUICK EXAMPLE: If I recognized that a song was being played in C major, by:
(1) knowing the notes of the C major scale, (2) knowing what notes are most likely to be played, and (3) knowing what notes are not likely to be played, I should be able to predict what notes will be played (or for that matter, what notes have already been played ...)
Below, the shaded notes represent the notes of the C Major Scale (the easiest scale to memorize because it's all the white notes)
By understanding (1) what scale they are created from (whether it is Major, Minor, Pentatonic, Aeolian, Phrygian ... don't worry, I will help you to understand these names and how their scales are created).
By understanding (2) what notes are immediately eliminated or less likely to occur throughout the sequence of a melody, and (3) what notes are most likely to be repeated (as illustrated above) ... one can learn virtually any melody presented to them!
